5 Steps to transferring Website MANUALLY
Changing to a new web host may sound like a difficult process, however, it can be pain-free if you follow the recommended steps below:
If you have to manually transfer your website to a new host, then view the 4 STEP guide Below:
1. We recommend keeping your existing web hosting account active
It is recommended that you keep your existing web hosting account active until you have fully completed the transfer steps
The next step is gathering all of the necessary information to facilitate a smooth transition. If you are reading this guide, then you have already begun this process. The most important attribute you can have before your web hosting transfer is confidence. You’ll need to be certain of your actions to avoid unnecessary mistakes and mishaps such as data loss.
First collect all of your login details from your current host. This includes your account number, your domain registrar, and your FTP login details. Once you have the information you’ll need to start downloading all of the website files from your current host. Take note of all the email addresses that are currently set up and using the same file structure copy them onto your computer’s hard drive.
2. Keep a backup of your Website files locally
It is extremely important to backup all data before executing the transfer. In fact, this is perhaps the most important step involved with the web hosting transfer, as it ultimately determines whether or not you will be crippled by data loss.
It is imperative to create a full backup of your web server and to place this backup onto a disc or some other form of external media like a hard drive. This way, your websites’ files are protected, even if your computer gets a virus or is damaged or stolen
Download all your website files, databases & images. Then make a backup copy.
3. Then transfer website files to new web host.
After you have made a backup, it is time to restore this information on the new web server.
The next step is by far the most technical; you’ll need to upload all of those new files to your new web host.
Use FTP, change file permissions on those that need it (you’ll be prompted,) create new databases, and import the backup database you have on file. Create the new email accounts and make adjustments to other settings on the site, if necessary.
It is important to note that you should not restore the information until you have examined the reliability of your new web hosting account. Restoring the site will be as simple as using the integrated backup utility in your control panel, or using an FTP client to upload all of the files.
Make sure ahead of time that you can contact your web host for support if you run into issues.
4. Change your nameservers or DNS records to point to your new web hosting server.
Once everything’s done you’ll need to test your site to make sure that it’s been done properly. This will be done before the site goes live, and by using the temporary subdomain that your new web host will provide upon registering. You’ll need to change any links or forms you’ve hardcoded the domain into relative links (changing it from www.yourdomain.com/page1.php to just /page1.php.
At your old host, change the nameservers to your new web hosting. Obtain the details from your web hosts. Wait for 24-48 hours before the changes are active.
5. When the website is active on the new web host, then remove the website from the old web hosting account.
Now that the transfer is complete, it is time to disable the old web hosting account and cancel the plan.
Test Your Website and keep your old account active for a few weeks.
It is important to make sure your new web hosting is reliable and fully functional before cancelling your old plan. This is especially true if you are purchasing the new plan in hopes of a more reliable web hosting service, as you don’t want to pay more and go through the hassle of a full web hosting transfer if the service and up time will be mediocre.
Once you’re certain that everything you need is completely over you can go ahead and cancel your old web host account.
It’s recommended that you wait at least an entire week to do this, just to make sure everything’s running smoothly with the new web host.
